I've just begun reading Ian McDonald's superlative, five-hundred-plus pages, new novel, "River of Gods", which also, incidentally, was short-listed for this year's Hugo awards. Christopher Priest writes in appreciation:

I haven't visited David Chadwick's excellent site devoted to Suzuki Roshi and San Francisco Zen Center in a while. Somehow I managed to find my way there this morning...

You should sit zazen with your whole body; your spine, mouth, toes, mudra. Check on your posture during zazen. Each part of your body should practice zazen independently or separately; your toe should practice zazen independently, your mudra should practice zazen independently; your spine and your mouth should practice zazen independently. You should feel each part of your body doing zazen separately. Each part of your body should participate completely in zazen.

watchdog for whom?

According to an article in Saturday's New York Times, the Food and Drug Administration is not willing to release to the public, er, that's us, information about how often and why heart devices fail. The F.D.A. receives such information from the makers of those devices on an annual basis, but will not release the data, calling it a corporate trade secret.

they say it's your birthday

I have a good friend, a best friend, born 60 years ago this day, Hiroshima Day. She's celebrating her birthday by partying with grandchildren and godchildren. Tonight she says she's going to Berkeley's Aquatic Park, to light a paper lantern that will float out on the waters, along with many other points of light. Lights of remembrance.
